THE HATE U GIVE REVIEW
The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas.
This novel is one that is timely, as it deals with issues that are facing the African-American community today; that is police killings of unarmed black individuals. It also tackles the systematic racism that is endemic in American society. This is all looked at through the lens of love, family, friendships and community.
The protagonist, Star, has to deal with navigating the fallout after witnessing the shooting of her best friend, by a police officer. As her life changes, so do her relationships with her family and friends; at home and school, as she struggles with finding and using her voice.
A novel that resonates within the black community, as we deal with societal prejudices and constructs that need to be dismantled.
